7 min

Is it hot in here?

Summer is here, and we all know what that means. Iced coffee is about to come back in a big way, and your “For You” is going to be full of iced coffee recipes – so let’s get ahead of the curve.

The “best” iced coffee

It’s the one you like the most! There’s no wrong way to enjoy iced coffee, especially if you’re starting to explore what flavours and textures you prefer. But let’s start at the beginning, and discuss some of the world’s favourite iced coffees in more detail.

Iced coffee: now home-made.

Make it yours

A few easy additions go a long way when you’re making your favourite cold coffee. Let’s get into it.

MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE – AND TASTEBUDS.

It’s so much more than just ice and coffee – it’s a creative playground. For example, you could freeze some coffee into ice cubes for your next cold treat, keeping things extra cool without watering it down.

Or you could add some of your favourite flavoured syrup to your coffee, and create something entirely unique. The possibilities are almost endless.

AN INTRODUCTION TO THE FRAPPE

AN ICED COFFEE CLASSIC

It’s the iciest a coffee can get - and it’s super easy to make at home.

MAKING A FRAPPE AT HOME

With a few simple ingredients, you’ll whip up a frappe so cold, summer won’t know what hit it! The only equipment you’ll need is a blender, or an ice-crusher if you’re fancy.

Add some ice cubes to the blender. Brew your favourite Starbucks® coffee, and pour it over the ice. Next, add about 1 cup of your preferred milk, or plant-based dairy alternative, and – once the lid is on tight – blend it together.

This is just the beginning.
There’s so much more you can do to this basic recipe! Add some flavoured syrup, vanilla extract, or chocolate sauce before you blend it for a delicious, flavoured frappe. Need more ideas? Check out our Brewing Methods page where you'll find even more inspiration.

COLD-BREW: MAKING COFFEE IN BULK

ALWAYS-READY ICED COFFEE

When the summer heat knocks, it’s better to have something ice-cold that’s ready to go – like home-made cold brew coffee.

MAKING COLD-BREW AT HOME

All you really need for cold-brew coffee at home is a large jar, some cheesecloth and a fridge. Now, it does require a bit of planning ahead – you’re going to use 4 Tbsp. (22g) of roast and ground coffee per cup you’re going to drink.

So, two cups of cold-brew needs 8 Tbsp. ground coffee, and so on.

Slowly add water to the jar, and gently swirl it around to make sure all the coffee is saturated. Cover it with a cheesecloth, and let it sit in the fridge overnight. And in the morning? Bold, rich, and refreshing cold-brew is ready to help you start your day.

INTRODUCING MILK BREW – A DELICIOUSLY CREAMY COFFEE

A NEW ICED COFFEE TREND

This rising trend from Japan is similar to cold-brew, but offers a completely different iced coffee experience. Let’s talk about it.

IT’S IN THE NAME

Milk-brewed coffee is a rising star in the iced coffee universe, and once you taste it, it’s easy to understand why. It has all the perks of cold-brew, but with an entirely different flavour profile, and a different texture to coffee brewed with water.

You’ll need coarsely ground coffee beans for this recipe; the grounds should look like coarse sea salt. Add up to 7 Tbsp. of coffee (40 grams), cover with 2 cups of milk, and chill overnight.

In the morning, strain the milk brewed coffee through a coffee filter, sieve or French press. Pour yourself a glass, and take on summer!

ICED COFFEE AT HOME – THERE’S MORE TO EXPLORE

Whatever the temperature, iced coffee is a must-have. And while we’ve covered a lot here – like milk-brewed coffee, home-made cold-brew and an easy frappe recipe – there’s a lot more out there waiting to be explored.
